The number one question I get asked as a family photographer is “What should we wear for our session?” I completely understand why this question comes up so often. Figuring out what to wear for spring family photos can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to coordinate an entire family while making sure everyone looks great together and feels comfortable in front of the camera.
Here’s the thing: what you wear absolutely matters. The right outfits help everyone feel confident and relaxed, which shows in your photos. They also contribute to the overall aesthetic and timeless feel of your images. When clothing choices are thoughtful and cohesive, the focus naturally shifts to what matters most: your family’s connection, the joy between you, and the love that holds everything together.
But finding the perfect outfit for yourself, let alone the whole family, and then making sure everything coordinates and will look good in photos? That’s enough to drive anyone a little crazy. The good news is, I’ve got you covered. My studio has a full wardrobe with beautiful options for mothers and children, and I also provide a client prep guide with visual examples of what to shop for if you prefer to use your own clothing. Not sure if something coordinates? Send me some photos and I’m always happy to weigh in with my professional opinion.
Let’s break down exactly what to wear for spring family photos so you can feel confident, prepared, and excited about your upcoming session.

Fall is always an extremely popular time of year for family photos because everyone wants the perfect holiday card, but don’t overlook spring! Southern California is absolutely gorgeous this time of year, and it’s one of my favorite seasons to photograph families.
With all of the rain we got earlier in the year, the trails are green and blooming with wildflowers and fresh growth. The beaches haven’t gotten crowded yet with summer travelers, which means we can enjoy peaceful, beautiful settings without the chaos. The air is warm but not too hot, making it comfortable for everyone, especially little ones who might get cranky in the summer heat.
Spring sessions typically take place on location at stunning beaches or scenic trails where the natural beauty is at its peak. My style for these sessions is a mix of gently guided poses and capturing candid moments so nothing feels overly stiff or staged. I’ll give you direction on where to stand, how to interact with each other, and how to position yourselves in flattering ways, but I also create space for real connection and natural movement. The goal is for your family to feel comfortable, relaxed, and genuinely present with each other while I capture the beautiful, authentic moments that unfold.
When deciding what to wear for spring family photos, the focus is on keeping things light, soft, and timeless so your images feel cohesive with the natural beauty of the setting.

Before we dive into specific outfit ideas for each family member, let’s talk about some general principles that will help you coordinate everyone beautifully.
Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and khakis. Instead, think about coordinating colors and styles without being too uniform. Choose a soft color palette (like cream, blush, sage, and soft blues) and let each person wear different pieces within that palette. This creates visual harmony without looking overly planned or stiff.
For example, Mom might wear a flowing cream dress, Dad could wear a soft blue button-down with tan chinos, and the kids might wear complementary neutrals or soft pastels. Everything works together, but each person still has their own individual style.
Busy patterns, bold graphics, and high contrast colors can be distracting in photos and pull focus away from your faces and connection. When choosing what to wear for spring family photos, I recommend avoiding black, bright reds, fuchsia, or any colors that might create a strong color cast on faces in natural light.
If you love patterns, stick to soft, small floral prints or subtle textures that add visual interest without overwhelming the image. The goal is for your clothing to complement the natural setting and the soft, timeless aesthetic we’re creating, not compete with it.
Spring weather can be unpredictable, and adding layers and textures to your outfits creates depth and visual interest in your photos. Think lightweight cardigans, linen shirts, flowing scarves, or a denim jacket for older kids. Textures like lace, crochet, linen, and soft knits photograph beautifully and add dimension to your images.
Layers also give you options if the weather shifts or if someone gets chilly during the session. Plus, they just look gorgeous in photos, especially when they move naturally in the breeze.

Let’s start with Mom, because once we have your outfit figured out, everything else falls into place much more easily.
I recommend choosing something that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable, and confident. Flowy maxi dresses, soft blouses paired with jeans or a skirt, or elegant midi dresses all work wonderfully for spring family sessions. Look for pieces in soft neutrals like cream, ivory, blush, sage, or soft blue. Small floral prints can also be lovely as long as they’re subtle and not too busy.
If you’re nursing or have a little one who might need to be held a lot during the session, consider comfort and ease of movement when choosing your outfit. Fabrics that flow and drape beautifully photograph gorgeously and allow you to move naturally without feeling restricted.
And here’s the best part: I have a curated wardrobe full of beautiful gowns and dresses specifically for mothers. You’re welcome to choose pieces from my collection, which means you don’t have to purchase something expensive that you might only wear once. Everything is carefully selected to photograph beautifully and coordinate effortlessly with the rest of your family.
If you prefer to shop for your own outfit, I love Morning Lavender in Solana Beach for gorgeous, feminine pieces, and Worth Collective online has stunning options that fit the elevated, timeless aesthetic perfectly.

Dads are usually the easiest to dress, and that’s great news! Once you’ve chosen outfits for Mom and the kids, it’s simple enough to coordinate Dad with neutral chinos and a soft button-down shirt.
I recommend sticking with classic, fitted clothing that looks polished but still feels comfortable and true to his style. Soft blues, grays, tans, or neutral tones work beautifully and coordinate effortlessly with the rest of the family. Avoid bold logos, graphics, or anything too trendy that might date your photos.
If your husband prefers a more casual look, a well-fitted henley or a simple crew-neck shirt in a neutral tone can also work perfectly. The key is making sure the fit is flattering and the colors complement the rest of the family without being too matchy.
For local shopping, Hansen’s Surf Shop in Encinitas has great casual, laid-back options, and Nordstrom is always a reliable choice for classic, timeless pieces that photograph well.
Babies are the easiest and most fun to dress! For spring family sessions, I recommend keeping it simple with soft, snug outfits like onesies, rompers, or swaddles in pastel colors or light, subtle patterns.
Neutrals like cream, soft gray, blush, and white photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby’s sweet face and tiny features. If you want to add a little personality, a small floral print or a delicate knit outfit can be adorable without being overwhelming.
One important tip: always bring at least one extra outfit for baby in case of accidents or spit-up during the session. Babies are unpredictable, and having a backup ensures we can keep going without stress.
And here’s more great news: I have an extensive client closet for babies and children, so you’re welcome to take advantage of that! We have beautiful, timeless pieces that coordinate perfectly with my wardrobe for mothers, which makes the entire process so much easier.
If you prefer to shop on your own, Target always has adorable basics, and Magical Child in Encinitas has beautiful, unique pieces that photograph gorgeously.

For older siblings, I recommend choosing outfits that mirror the style and color palette of the parents without being too matchy. Think coordinating tones and textures rather than identical outfits.
Comfort is key, especially for younger children who might be sitting on the ground, running around, or playing during the session. Choose clothing that allows them to move freely and feel like themselves. Soft cotton dresses, linen shirts, comfortable pants, and simple layers all work beautifully.
I also love involving older children in the outfit selection process when possible. Letting them have a say in what they wear (within your coordinated color palette, of course) helps them feel included and more excited about the session. When kids feel comfortable and confident in what they’re wearing, it shows in the photos.
Again, I have a wonderful selection of clothing for children in my client wardrobe, so you’re welcome to choose pieces from my collection. It takes so much pressure off and ensures everything coordinates beautifully.
For local shopping, Rylee + Cru has gorgeous, timeless pieces with a soft, natural aesthetic, and Sweet Pea Children’s Shop in Del Mar is another favorite for beautiful, high-quality clothing that photographs wonderfully.
You’ve chosen your outfits, coordinated everyone beautifully, and your session is coming up. Here are a few final tips to make sure everything goes smoothly:
Even with the best planning, things happen. A baby might have a diaper blowout, a toddler might spill juice on their shirt, or you might change your mind at the last minute. Bring one backup outfit for each person, especially for babies and young children. It gives you peace of mind and ensures we can keep the session moving if something unexpected happens.
Make sure everyone is well-rested and has eaten before your session. Tired, hungry kids (and adults!) don’t make for joyful, relaxed photos. Plan your day so everyone arrives feeling good, energized, and ready to have fun together. A snack in the car on the way to the session can work wonders!
Before you leave for your session, do a quick final check for wrinkles, stains, and pet hair. Run a lint roller over everyone’s clothing, steam or iron anything that needs it, and make sure shoes are clean. These little details make a big difference in your final images.
Most importantly, take a deep breath and remember that the goal of this session is connection, joy, and celebrating your family. The outfits are important, but they’re just one piece of the puzzle. Trust the process, show up ready to laugh and enjoy each other, and let me take care of the rest.

Deciding what to wear for spring family photos doesn’t have to be stressful or overwhelming. By focusing on soft neutrals and pastels, coordinating without being too matchy, and prioritizing comfort and confidence for everyone, you’ll create a cohesive, timeless look that photographs beautifully.
And remember, I’m here to help every step of the way. With access to my curated client wardrobe for mothers and children, personalized styling guidance, and professional advice on what works best for your family, you’re never left guessing or stressing on your own.
