I didn’t start off my career as a San Diego & La Jolla newborn photographer. In fact, although I’ve loved photography my whole life, my educational background is in athletic training & kinesiology. I was still working in that field about a year before my first daughter was born. For a few years I dabbled in action sports photography, but once my first daughter was born I found my calling. I don’t have any traditional, posed newborn photos of her unfortunately and I still regret it. My love for photography skyrocketed and I loved capturing her as she grew. I poured myself into training and after a few years I officially opened my business up over ten years ago. I still regret not having professional photos of her first few weeks to this day.
Based on my experience (on both sides of the camera), here are my top 5 reasons why I think you should at least consider hiring a pro La Jolla newborn photographer!
The first few weeks are a total blur. Some days you might not know which end is up. Time is a premium in these first few weeks. There just aren’t enough hours in the day, especially for sleep! It takes a significant amount of time to plan, capture, and edit all those wonderful newborn details and poses! I have a great workflow down and it still takes an average of 2-3 hours for a session.
Anyone can go buy an entry level camera at Best Buy these days. Even the newer iPhones take stunning pics. The key is knowing how to work it. Besides professional cameras and lighting equipment, I’ve invested thousands into gorgeous wraps, layers, dainty headbands and hand-knitted newborn items for my tiny clients. I have a great selection of timeless props to offer as well. I’m always on the lookout for high quality items to add to my studio.
Education is also very important. I had plenty of photography classes in college, but it wasn’t until I decided to dive into family & newborn photography that I really upped my game in the education department. I’m constantly learning, taking courses and expanding my knowledge on how to provide my clients with the best possible service and images they can cherish for years to come.
Have you ever seen Cake Wrecks? Trying to get your newborn baby into intricate poses, might be a recipe for disaster. Getting your baby safely and perfectly into specific poses takes years of training and practice in addition to a vast understanding of lighting and safety techniques. There are times it takes close to 15-20 minutes just to achieve a certain pose. I always follow the baby’s cues and don’t mind waiting patiently for them to settle into a nice deep sleep so they can be comfortably molded into the perfect position. It takes time and a TON of patience.
This is a huge reason why you want a trained professional. You want someone who is trained in newborn photography safety as well as having years of experience handling babies. This is the most important person in your life now. You don’t want to hand your sweet baby over to someone just learning with no mentor on hand. Would you let someone remodel your kitchen without a serious amount of training? That might not end well! Some of the more difficult poses like the “head on hands” pose you see below is done in stages for the baby’s safety. You can be confident that your precious little one’s safety is my top priority.
Unfortunately these fleeting moments only happen once, and they deserve to be captured and remembered for years to come. While I may be biased as a newborn photographer, I believe these timeless images will stand the test of time. You want to look back and remember just how tiny their toes were or how precious they looked all snuggled up into the perfect sleepy pose. You will quickly forget just how small they are in your arms. Let me provide you with these memories for you to cherish when they are in the phase of “no mom, I can do it myself!”
Don’t miss out on having these beautiful memories. Find someone in your area that you trust and that shares your vision for capturing these wonderful fleeting moments. I promise you won’t regret it!
