Right now, you’re probably focused on finishing the nursery, adding the last few items to your registry, and figuring out which stroller actually fits through your front door. Booking a newborn photographer? That feels like something you can handle after the baby arrives, right? Here’s the thing: future-you is going to be sleep-deprived, covered in spit-up, and struggling to remember what day of the week it is. Present-you, on the other hand, has the mental space and energy to secure those beautiful newborn photos without the stress. Trust me, your third trimester self will thank you for handling this now.
As an Oceanside newborn photographer serving families throughout San Diego, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, and surrounding areas, I’ve had countless conversations with brand new parents who wish they’d reached out sooner. The timing of when you book can make the difference between a relaxed, dreamy session with a perfectly sleepy newborn and a stressful scramble to find anyone with availability.
Let me walk you through exactly when to book your newborn session, why it matters, and what to expect when you reach out.

There’s something truly special about those first few weeks with a newborn. They’re still so fresh from the womb, curled up in those impossibly tiny poses, sleeping deeply through gentle movement and repositioning. This is the window when newborn photography creates those dreamy, peaceful images you’ve probably been pinning to your inspiration boards.
My ideal age range for newborn sessions is between two and three weeks old. During this time, babies are generally sleepier, easier to pose, and more comfortable being gently positioned into those gorgeous curled-up shots that feel timeless and serene. Their skin is smooth, they’re still in that deep newborn sleep cycle, and they haven’t yet developed some of the temporary newborn quirks that come a bit later.
Now, here’s what I want you to know: I’ve photographed babies as early as four days old and created traditional sleepy newborn portraits even as late as eight weeks. I welcome older newborns with open arms, and unlike some photographers who won’t work with babies past a certain age, I know how to create beautiful images no matter when we meet your little one.
That said, there are some differences. Newer newborns tend to be sleepier and more flexible, which makes those classic curled poses easier to achieve. Older newborns might be more awake, dealing with newborn acne, experiencing peely skin, or simply more aware of their surroundings and hungry more frequently. The sessions are still absolutely beautiful, they just require a bit more patience and a different approach.
The point isn’t to create anxiety about timing. It’s simply to help you understand why planning ahead gives you the best chance of capturing that fleeting sleepy stage while also removing the stress of trying to coordinate everything in those first overwhelming days after birth.

So when should you actually reach out to book your newborn session? The sweet spot is during your second trimester, ideally somewhere around the halfway point of your pregnancy or shortly after. I also work with mothers who reach out in their early third trimester, and that can work beautifully too.
Here’s why booking during pregnancy makes such a difference: it gives you time to plan thoughtfully, ask questions, get to know each other, and check one major thing off your list before life gets beautifully chaotic. It also ensures you’re working with the photographer you actually want, not just whoever happens to have a last-minute opening.
My goal is to photograph only one to two newborn sessions per day. This allows every single one of my clients to have a truly relaxed, unhurried experience without me feeling rushed or stretched thin. It’s how I maintain the level of care and attention that makes my sessions feel calm and supportive.
What that means in practice is that my calendar can fill up quickly, especially during busy seasons. There have been times, like this past spring, when it felt like there was a baby boom happening all at once. Availability became limited fast, and families who had planned ahead were so grateful they’d already secured their spot.
Once I know your due date, I put a placeholder on my calendar that typically says something like “baby arrives between [date range].” I make a mental note that your baby could arrive two to three weeks early or about a week late, and I’m careful not to overbook those surrounding weeks. Pre-booked clients always get first priority, so your spot is held as a tentative reservation that flexes with your baby’s actual arrival.
The peace of mind that comes from having this handled before you’re in the thick of newborn life? It’s absolutely worth it.

Babies have their own timeline, and due dates are really just educated guesses. Flexibility is essential, and I build that into how I schedule and plan.
Just recently, one of my Heirloom Membership clients had her baby arrive three weeks early. She contacted me right away, and because she’d already booked and I had her due date range blocked out, I was able to schedule her session for about two weeks after her unexpected early arrival. Everything worked out beautifully, and she didn’t have to stress about scrambling to find availability during an already overwhelming time.
I’ve also had the opposite happen. One client’s baby decided to arrive a bit late, and another new client’s baby came a little early. Because I plan conservatively and hold space around due dates, that last-minute opening worked perfectly for the family whose baby came early, and everyone got the relaxed experience they deserved.
The key is communication. When your baby arrives, you or your partner can send me a quick message letting me know, and we’ll finalize the session date from there. There’s no pressure, no stress, and no need to worry about whether I’ll have space for you. That’s the entire point of booking ahead.
You might be wondering why newborn photographers have such limited availability in the first place. Why can’t we just book every family who reaches out?
For me, it comes down to the experience I want to create. Newborn sessions require patience, calm energy, and a significant amount of time. I don’t rush through sessions or pack my schedule back to back. Each family deserves my full attention, a relaxed environment, and the knowledge that I’m not mentally calculating how quickly I need to wrap up so I can get to the next appointment.
Photographing one to two newborn sessions per day is my limit because it allows me to show up fully present for every single family. It means I can take breaks when baby needs to nurse or be soothed. It means I’m not exhausted or stretched thin. And it means the quality of the experience and the images never suffers.
When photographers book up quickly, it’s often because they’ve made this same choice: quality and care over volume. It’s not about being exclusive or hard to reach. It’s about protecting the experience we want to provide.
When you book early, you’re not just securing a spot on my calendar. You’re choosing to work with the photographer whose style, approach, and values resonate with you, rather than settling for whoever happens to be available at the last minute.

If you’re reading this and thinking, “Okay, I’m convinced. What now?” let me walk you through exactly what happens when you reach out.
First, contact me with your due date and any initial questions you might have. It’s helpful to know whether this is your first baby or if you have older children, but honestly, just reaching out is the most important step. There’s no such thing as reaching out too early.
All inquiries typically hear from me within the first 24 hours. I pride myself on customer service, and I want my clients to feel like family from the very beginning. When I respond, I’ll send over full session information so you know exactly what to expect, and I’m always happy to answer any questions you have.
There’s no pressure and no commitment in that first conversation. It’s simply a chance for us to connect, for you to learn more about how I work, and for me to start getting to know you and your growing family.
From there, if it feels like a good fit, we’ll move forward with booking. I’ll get your due date on my calendar, walk you through what to expect as we get closer to your baby’s arrival, and make sure you feel completely prepared and supported every step of the way.

Booking your newborn session during pregnancy is a gift to yourself. It’s one less thing to worry about when you’re navigating those first sleepless weeks. It’s the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’ve secured the photographer you actually want, not just whoever happens to be available. And it’s the confidence that this meaningful milestone will be preserved beautifully without you having to coordinate logistics while running on two hours of sleep.
With over 17 years of photographing newborns, I’ve learned that timing truly does matter. Not because there’s only one “right” window or because older newborns can’t be photographed beautifully (they absolutely can), but because planning ahead removes stress and creates space for the experience to feel calm, intentional, and joyful.
If I could tell my best friend who just found out she’s pregnant one thing, it would be this: reach out to your newborn photographer now. Get it on the calendar. Let someone else take care of the details. And then relax knowing that when your baby arrives, you’ll have one less thing to figure out and one more reason to simply soak in those precious early days.
If you’re expecting a baby and you’re ready to start the conversation, I’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re halfway through your second trimester or just found out you’re pregnant last week, now is the perfect time to reach out. Contact me here to learn more about newborn sessions, ask any questions, and get your spot secured on my calendar.
Your future self, holding that beautiful newborn and feeling grateful this is already handled? She’s going to thank you. 🤍
