Pregnancy is equal parts magical and exhausting. I know because I’ve lived it—four times(I’m a mama to 6, but two are bonus children). And here’s what I didn’t expect: I actually missed it when it was over. The anticipation, the quiet moments feeling those kicks, the way your body is doing something truly extraordinary. It passes so quickly, and maternity photos are one of the most meaningful ways to honor this season before it becomes a memory.
As a Carlsbad maternity photography professional with over 17 years of experience, I’ve had the privilege of photographing hundreds of expectant mothers during this tender, fleeting chapter. I understand how overwhelming those last weeks can feel, and I’ve designed my maternity sessions to be calm, guided, and genuinely enjoyable. My goal is to help you feel beautiful, comfortable, and completely at ease while we create portraits you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
Whether you’re expecting your first baby or adding to your growing family, preparing for your maternity session doesn’t have to be stressful. In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know so you can show up feeling confident, relaxed, and excited to celebrate this incredible season.

The ideal time for your maternity session is usually between 30 and 36 weeks. At this stage, you’ll have a beautiful, visible bump but still feel comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the experience.
That said, every pregnancy is different. Some mothers show earlier, while others carry differently and prefer to wait a bit longer. I’ve photographed expecting mothers as early as a few weeks before 30 for those expecting multiples (twins, triplets) who tend to grow more quickly and may deliver earlier. I’ve also photographed mothers as late as almost 39 weeks who felt great and wanted to wait.
The most important thing is choosing a time when you feel good and have enough energy to enjoy the session. If you’re unsure about timing, reach out during your second trimester and we can plan together based on how you’re feeling and when your due date falls.
Booking early also ensures you get your preferred date and time. Most of my outdoor maternity sessions in Carlsbad, Encinitas, and surrounding areas align with sunset for that gorgeous, golden light. Those time slots fill quickly, so reserving your spot ahead of time gives you the best options.

One of the questions I’m asked most often is whether to do a studio or outdoor maternity session. Honestly, I love both equally, and the right choice depends on your vision and comfort level.
Most of my clients are drawn to outdoor sessions because San Diego offers some of the most stunning coastal settings imaginable. There’s something timeless about maternity portraits taken at the beach with soft, glowing light and the ocean in the background.
Some of my favorite beach locations for maternity photography include South Carlsbad State Beach, Oceanside Pier, the dunes on Coronado Island, and Torrey Pines in La Jolla. Each location offers a unique feel, from wide open sandy stretches to dramatic cliffs and intimate coastal settings.
If you prefer something other than the beach, I also have gorgeous trail options in South Carlsbad, East Encinitas, and Rancho Santa Fe. These locations offer beautiful natural light, greenery, and a softer, more intimate feel that photographs beautifully.
Most outdoor sessions are scheduled around sunset, which provides the most flattering, natural glow. The light is soft, warm, and incredibly forgiving. It also creates that dreamy, romantic quality that makes maternity portraits feel timeless.

Studio sessions offer a different kind of beauty. They feel more intimate, peaceful, and private. My studio is located in South Carlsbad, just minutes from Encinitas, and designed to be a calm, welcoming space where you can relax completely.
A studio session can be especially helpful if you’d like to wear something a bit more revealing to show off your beautiful baby bump but don’t feel comfortable doing so at the beach. There’s no need to worry about weather, wind, or passersby. It’s just you, your partner if you’d like, and a cozy, controlled environment where we can focus entirely on capturing this moment.
Studio sessions also offer more flexibility with timing since we’re not relying on sunset or weather conditions. If you’re feeling tired or need breaks, we can move at whatever pace feels right.
Whether you choose the beach, a scenic trail, or the comfort of my studio, I’ll help you select the location that best matches your vision and makes you feel most at ease.

One of the biggest concerns expecting mothers have is what to wear for their maternity session. I completely understand that worry, and I’m here to make it as easy as possible.
My studio offers a beautifully curated wardrobe with elegant gowns specifically for maternity photography. I love soft, flowy gowns that drape beautifully and move with the breeze during outdoor sessions. These create that romantic, timeless look that photographs so gorgeously.
Fitted gowns are also available if you’d like to show off your curves a little more and celebrate the beautiful shape of your body during pregnancy. Both styles photograph beautifully, and I’ll help you choose the option that feels most like you.
I highly recommend light neutrals and soft, delicate florals. These colors complement the natural light I work with and create a timeless, elegant feel that won’t look dated years from now. White, cream, blush, sage, and soft lavender are always stunning choices.
The best part? You don’t need to purchase a $100+ dress that you might never wear again. Everything is provided, and you’re welcome to try on multiple options during your session if you’d like.
If you prefer to wear your own clothing, I’m more than happy to help with styling. I can offer guidance on colors, fabrics, and silhouettes that will photograph beautifully and make you feel confident.
For outdoor sessions, flowing fabrics like chiffon or jersey work beautifully because they move naturally and create stunning, romantic images. For studio sessions, anything that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable works perfectly.
If your partner or other children will be joining the session, I also have wardrobe options for siblings if needed. For partners, I typically recommend neutral tones like soft blues, grays, whites, or tans that complement your gown without competing for attention. Simple outfits without loud patterns or characters work best so the focus stays on you and your growing family.
The goal is for everyone to feel comfortable and coordinated without being overly matchy-matchy. I’ll guide you through the entire process so nothing feels stressful or overwhelming.

After having a baby, your world will be all about your little one for quite a while. Your maternity session is a rare opportunity to focus entirely on you, and I highly recommend taking full advantage of it.
I offer the option to book a trusted professional hair and makeup artist who specializes in natural, camera-ready looks. This isn’t about heavy makeup or looking like someone you’re not. It’s about enhancing your natural beauty and helping you feel polished, confident, and genuinely pampered.
Pregnancy can be tiring, and getting ready for photos might feel like one more thing on an already overwhelming to-do list. Booking professional hair and makeup takes that pressure off completely. You’ll feel taken care of, beautiful, and like the best version of yourself.
Plus, it’s a gift to yourself. You deserve to be celebrated during this season, and feeling gorgeous in your photos is part of that experience.
If you prefer to do your own hair and makeup, that’s absolutely fine too. I just encourage you to keep it natural, soft, and true to who you are. Light, fresh makeup and loose, flowing hair always photograph beautifully.
In the week leading up to your session, a little extra care can help you feel your best.
Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water in the days before your session will help your skin look fresh and glowing. It also helps you feel more energized, which makes a big difference during the session itself.
Moisturize daily. Pregnancy can make skin feel dry, so keep your body moisturized. This is especially important if you’re planning to wear a fitted gown or show more skin in a studio session.
Get plenty of rest. I know that’s easier said than done when you’re pregnant, but rest as much as you can in the days leading up to your session. You’ll feel more comfortable, and it will show in your photos.
Treat yourself to a simple manicure. Try to avoid darker colors on nails, especially if you are going for the recommended light neutral look. I made the mistake of having a Christmas tree on my nail for family photos & my eye went right to it. I should know better of all people!
And most importantly, be gentle with yourself. Your body is doing something extraordinary. These photos are about celebrating that, not achieving perfection.
Depending on the location and time of year, I’ll let you know what’s needed in addition to anything I provide.
For outdoor sessions, I typically recommend bringing:
For studio sessions, the process is even simpler. Everything you need is provided, so you can simply show up and relax, although bringing your touch-up makeup isn’t a bad idea.
If you have a second outfit option or want to bring something personal to wear, feel free. I want you to feel prepared and comfortable, and I’m always happy to work with whatever makes you feel most like yourself. Just make sure to communicate that ahead of time so we can plan the timing accordingly.

I completely understand feeling awkward in front of the camera. Honestly, I always feel awkward myself when I’m being photographed, so I truly get it.
The good news? You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. That’s my job, and I’ll gently guide you through everything.
I focus on movement, connection, and creating space for you to simply be present. Instead of stiff, forced poses, I’ll encourage you to move naturally, interact with your partner if they’re with you, and place your hands in ways that feel comfortable and flattering.
If you’re worried about certain angles or areas of your body, let me know. I’m mindful of how light, posing, and positioning work together to create the most flattering, beautiful images. You’re in safe, experienced hands.
Most importantly, I want you to feel like yourself. The most beautiful maternity portraits happen when mothers feel comfortable, confident, and genuinely at ease. That’s what I create space for in every session.
If your partner or other children will be joining the session, they’re absolutely welcome. In fact, some of the most meaningful maternity portraits include the whole family celebrating this new chapter together.
For partners, I recommend coordinating outfits without being too matchy-matchy. Neutral tones like soft blues, grays, whites, or tans photograph beautifully and complement most gown choices. Simple outfits without loud patterns work best so the focus stays on you and the connection between you.
For siblings, I have wardrobe options available if needed, and I’m skilled at working with children of all ages. Simple outfits without loud patterns or characters work best. The goal is for everyone to look coordinated and comfortable without feeling overly styled.
I know how to work with families, and I understand that kids can be unpredictable. There’s no pressure for perfection. We’ll move at whatever pace feels right, take breaks if needed, and create images that feel natural and joyful.

One of the most important things you can do to prepare for your session is to communicate openly with me about any concerns, preferences, or specific things you’d like to capture.
If there are areas of your body you’d prefer to minimize or angles that make you uncomfortable, let me know. If you have a specific vision for your photos or certain poses you’ve seen and loved, share those with me. If you’re feeling nervous or unsure, tell me that too.
I’m here to make this experience as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. Clear communication helps ensure we’re on the same page and that the session feels exactly right for you.
Pregnancy affects everyone differently, and I’ll always work with you to find poses that feel good for your body. If you need a break during the session or if something feels uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to speak up. This is your experience, and I want you to feel supported every step of the way.
Pregnancy is a fleeting, magical time that passes all too quickly. Even though it can be hard and tiring, it’s also incredibly special.
These photos aren’t just about looking beautiful (though you absolutely will). They’re about documenting an incredible chapter in your life, celebrating your body for what it’s doing, and honoring the anticipation and love that come with welcoming a new life.
Try to relax and enjoy the experience rather than focusing on looking perfect in every shot. The most beautiful maternity photos capture the anticipation, love, and connection you feel during this special time—not just your physical appearance.
Your future self will thank you for making the time to do this. Whether you choose an outdoor sunset session on the beaches of Carlsbad or an intimate studio experience, these images will become treasured keepsakes for both you and your child.
As someone who missed being pregnant once it was over, trust me when I say you won’t regret making the investment to capture this season beautifully and intentionally.
Whether you choose a stunning outdoor session at South Carlsbad State Beach, the dunes on Coronado Island, or a peaceful studio experience, the images we create together will become part of your family’s story. They’ll remind you of this magical, fleeting time and the incredible thing your body did.
