What Is The Best Age for Newborn Photos

Are you currently expecting and wondering what is the best age for newborn photos to be taken?

As a newborn photographer in SoCal, I’m often asked this exact question, for valid reason. A quick search turns up a broad age range. Why? Because there are many different styles of newborn photography and each lends itself to different ages. Additionally, it’s at the photographer’s discretion.

Some photography styles you might be familiar with

Posed newborn photography (this is typically what comes to mind when one thinks of newborn pictures with only baby)

Lifestyle newborn photography (this is a more relaxed, naturally posed session and includes family members)

My newborn portraits include primarily a mix of swaddled and unswaddled, sleeping babies in a natural position as well as some safe, artistic poses. This style of posing gives way for a broader age range for newborn photos in the studio. Ideally, the newborn session is somewhere between 1-3 weeks after birth, but it’s not a hard and fast rule!

When someone asks me what is the best age for newborn photos to be taken, the standard answer is 1-3 weeks like I mentioned before. That being said, I never turn down a newborn because of age though. We can still get plenty of precious shots with an “older” newborn even if they are awake! If we get lucky and have a sleeper on our hands, even better! I do explain to all parents that I always roll with the needs of the baby and only do certain poses if the baby is sound asleep and comfortable. As long as we keep realistic expectations, it will be great!
