Senior year moves fast. Trust me, I know. My oldest graduated last year, and our second child is a senior at La Costa Canyon High School right now. We have three other teens in high school and middle school, so I’m living this season right alongside you—and I understand just how quickly these years pass by.
It feels like yesterday they were starting kindergarten, and now they’re choosing colleges, planning their futures, and stepping into what’s next. Senior portraits aren’t just another item on the to-do list. They’re a way to pause and celebrate this milestone before it becomes a memory.
As a senior photographer serving San Diego, Encinitas, Carlsbad, San Diego, La Jolla, Del Mar, Oceanside, and surrounding areas, I’ve had the privilege of photographing hundreds of high school seniors during this exciting, bittersweet chapter. With over 17 years of experience in the business and the perspective of a mom navigating these same years, I know how to create senior portraits that feel authentic, timeless, and completely true to who your senior is right now.
If you’re searching for the best senior photographer for your Class of 2026 graduate, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know—from when to book, where to go, what to wear, and how to make the experience as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Timing is everything when it comes to senior portraits, and if you’re planning ahead for your Class of 2026 senior, now is the time to get on the calendar.
Some students need their yearbook photos done early and book sessions during the fall of their senior year. However, spring is the most popular season for senior photos in San Diego. The weather is perfect, the flowers are blooming on the trails and in the fields, and the light is absolutely gorgeous.
The challenge? Spring sessions sell out quickly. By the time March and April roll around, my calendar is often fully booked. If you wait too long, you may end up scrambling to find availability or settling for a time or location that isn’t your first choice.
I highly recommend booking your session as soon as possible—ideally several months in advance. This ensures you get your preferred date, time, and location, and it also gives you plenty of time to plan for graduation announcements, yearbook submissions, and any other deadlines that come up during senior year.
Senior year is busy enough. Let’s take one thing off your plate by getting your session scheduled early so you can relax knowing it’s handled.

One of the best parts of being a senior photographer in San Diego is the incredible variety of locations available. Whether your senior loves the beach, prefers natural trails and wildflowers, or wants something more urban and edgy, there’s a setting that will feel perfectly suited to their personality.
The beach is always a favorite for senior portraits, and it’s easy to see why. The ocean, the sand, the golden light reflecting off the water—it all creates a timeless, classic backdrop that never goes out of style.
Some of my favorite beach locations include South Carlsbad State Beach, the iconic Oceanside Pier, Swami’s in Encinitas at low tide, the stunning cliffs and coves in La Jolla, and the beautiful scenery near Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. Each location offers something unique, from wide open sandy stretches to dramatic coastal views.
Beach sessions are typically scheduled around sunset for that gorgeous, soft, glowing light that makes skin tones look beautiful and creates a dreamy, romantic feel.
Spring brings amazing flowers to the trails and fields throughout North County San Diego, and these locations are absolutely stunning for senior portraits. I have some secret spots that offer vibrant blooms, soft natural light, and settings that feel fresh and unique.
Trails near Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad, and various spots throughout Encinitas offer beautiful natural backdrops that photograph gorgeously. These locations are perfect for seniors who want something a little different from the typical beach session.
If your senior has a more modern, edgy style, urban locations can be a great choice. Downtown Encinitas has some cute urban spots with texture and character. Little Italy in downtown San Diego offers fun pops of color, interesting textures, and a more contemporary vibe. Downtown Solana Beach also has some great options for mixing things up.
I love to incorporate a variety of settings during a session to give seniors diverse images that show different sides of their personality. We might start at the beach and then move to a nearby urban spot for a completely different look—all in one session.
While I do have a studio available, most seniors prefer the gorgeous outdoor locations San Diego has to offer. The natural light, the variety, and the relaxed feel of outdoor sessions tend to resonate more with this age group. That said, if your senior prefers a more controlled, intimate setting, studio sessions are always an option.

One of the most common questions I get from parents and seniors is what to wear for senior portraits. I’m always happy to help with wardrobe guidance because I know it can feel overwhelming.
I have a client wardrobe geared specifically toward my female clients, with loads of dresses to choose from. These are carefully selected pieces that photograph beautifully and offer a range of styles—from flowy and romantic to more fitted and polished.
Access to the client wardrobe takes the pressure off finding the perfect outfit, and it means you don’t have to purchase something expensive that might only be worn once. Many seniors love mixing their own personal style with a dress or two from my collection to create variety in their images.
Young men are typically pretty easy to shop for. I usually suggest bringing a few outfits that reflect their personal style—casual button-downs, fitted t-shirts, jeans, or khakis all work well.
If your senior knows where they’re heading off to college, a college tee or sweatshirt is a great addition. It’s a meaningful way to celebrate this next chapter and creates images that will feel even more special years down the road.
I typically recommend lighter colors, especially for beach or trail sessions. Soft neutrals, whites, creams, blues, and earth tones photograph beautifully in natural light and create a timeless, cohesive feel.
That said, if there’s a special item your senior wants to wear—like a bright red letter jacket they earned or a team jersey that represents something meaningful—by all means, bring it. These are special pieces that tell their story, and we can absolutely incorporate them into a few photos.
The most important thing is that your senior feels comfortable and true to themselves. I want them to look back at these images years from now and think, “That was me. That’s exactly who I was.”
I typically recommend bringing 2-3 outfits depending on the length of the session and how much variety you want. This allows us to create different looks and gives you more options when choosing your final images.
If your senior has specific interests, hobbies, or activities they want to incorporate—like sports equipment, musical instruments, or anything else that represents who they are—we can absolutely work those in as well.

Senior portraits should be fun, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable. Here’s how to prepare so your senior feels confident and ready.
Hair and makeup are a great idea for female seniors who would like a little extra pampering and a moment to feel extra special. It’s not required, but it can be a wonderful way to elevate the experience and help your senior feel polished and camera-ready.
I work with trusted hair and makeup artists who specialize in natural, age-appropriate looks that enhance rather than cover up. If this is something you’re interested in, let me know and I can connect you with my recommended professionals.
In addition to outfits, I recommend bringing:
If there’s anything specific you’re hoping to incorporate or any concerns you have, let me know ahead of time. I send out a questionnaire before each session to learn about your senior’s interests and anything that might be helpful for me to know. This helps me personalize the experience and create images that truly reflect who they are.

I’ve been photographing high school seniors for over 17 years, and I bring not only professional experience but also the perspective of a parent who’s navigating these exact same years.
The biggest worry I hear from seniors is that they’ll feel awkward in front of the camera. I completely understand that concern, and it’s exactly why I approach sessions the way I do.
I don’t just show up and start directing seniors into stiff, uncomfortable poses. Instead, I focus on connecting genuinely with them first. I want to know who they are, what they love, and what makes them feel confident. The sessions flow naturally with gentle guidance rather than forced posing.
My goal is for seniors to feel like themselves—not like they’re performing or pretending to be someone they’re not. The best senior portraits happen when students feel comfortable, relaxed, and genuinely at ease. That’s what I create space for in every session.
As a mom of multiple teens (one of whom has already graduated), I understand how overwhelming senior year can be. Between college applications, sports, activities, academics, and everything else, the last thing you need is a stressful photography experience.
I aim to make the process as easy and stress-free as possible. From booking to the session itself to selecting your final images and products, I guide you through every step. You’re never left wondering what to do next or feeling uncertain about decisions.
My photography style is timeless, natural, and focused on who your senior truly is right now. I’m not chasing trends or creating images that will feel dated in a few years. Instead, I focus on clean, classic compositions with beautiful light and genuine expressions.
These photos should feel just as meaningful and beautiful ten years from now as they do today. That’s always my goal.

If you’re a parent reading this, I want to acknowledge how you might be feeling right now. Senior year is bittersweet. You’re proud, excited, and maybe a little emotional about how fast time has passed.
I promise you, these photos and memories will be something you cherish. Feel free to come to the session and sit back to enjoy this moment. Watch your senior laugh, relax, and step into their confidence. It’s a beautiful thing to witness.
And once they’re off to college, you’ll be able to see their smiling face every day through the custom framed artwork or heirloom album we create together. That daily reminder of this special season? It means more than you might realize right now.

Once your session is complete, I carefully curate and hand-edit your images. When your gallery is ready, I’ll walk you through the process of selecting your favorites and help you choose the products that make the most sense for your family.
Digital files for sharing online are always a favorite—seniors love being able to post their images on social media and share them with friends and family. These are perfect for announcements, yearbook submissions, and celebrating this milestone publicly.
Heirloom albums are another popular choice. These beautifully designed, professionally printed albums become keepsakes that your senior (and you) will treasure for years to come. They’re tangible, meaningful, and something that can be passed down.
Custom framed artwork for the home is also a wonderful option. Having your senior’s portrait displayed beautifully in your home is a daily reminder of this chapter, and it becomes even more meaningful once they leave for college.
Whatever you choose, I’ll help you make decisions that feel right for your family and your life.

The Class of 2026 is special. These students were in middle school during COVID, navigating some of the most formative years of their lives during an incredibly challenging time. Their resilience, adaptability, and strength deserve to be honored.
