Booking newborn photos at home vs in a photography studio

When it comes to deciding where you want your newborn portraits taken, the two primary choices are in your home or in a photography studio. While both are beautiful, there are specific differences to be aware of when booking portraits. Below I will highlight those so you have a greater understanding of what to expect from your newborn photos taken at home or studio.

Lifestyle session, aka “at home”

• Taken in the comfort of your own home, like the session below. These are ideal for a client wanting to document the more candid aspect of this season of life. Bonus: pets are always welcome to join!
• Primarily taken in your living room area, master bedroom, and nursery.
• Your gallery is more focused on family connection than solo baby images. Solo babies will typically be of baby in your arms, in their crib, or on your bed. Baby will be either wrapped, in an outfit of your choosing, or a diaper.
• White/light walls are needed for lighting! We can always schedule a video chat for a virtual tour of your home if you are concerned about lighting.

Studio newborn portraits

• Taken in my photography studio & includes all of the accessories needed for posed portraits. Studio portraits are ideal for a client wanting a neutral background and more heavily focused on posed images of baby. Bonus: no need to clean the house before!
• Posed images can include an array of props, accessories and poses. Note, older babies do not offer as much flexibility and limit what poses are doable, but we can still get a beautiful gallery regardless. I encourage portraits be taken 2-3 weeks after baby is born.
• Galleries will include all of the family and combinations of family members, and posed newborn portraits.

If you choose me to be your newborn photographer either at my photography studio or have your Newborn photos at home, all sessions include access to my client wardrobe & styling services. Sessions take anywhere for 1-2 hours to allow for plenty of time for feedings, changes, and soothing to keep your baby happy. Additionally, clients have the option to add an outdoor location to their session like sunset portraits at the beach.
