Pregnancy is a journey full of so many emotions and excitement. It beings with the first time you see those two lines. Your body changes right before your eyes and it’s nothing short of a miracle even when you can see your toes anymore. It’s all a part of the amazing experience, and it’s a time you’ll want to capture to remember forever. This is where I come in. After over 10 years being an Encinitas Maternity Photographer, I will help document this beautiful time in your family’s life.
The most important element of looking your best in your maternity photos is the photographer. You will want a maternity photographer highly trained in pregnancy photography. A professional maternity photographer will know how to light, pose and photograph you in angles that flatter your face and body. Looking at a portfolio is a good place to start. In addition, most professionals have Instagram and Facebook accounts as well.
As an experienced maternity photographer, I strive to help you feel like the stunning mama you are. You’re carrying life inside of you! That connection is like nothing else. I love highlighting the ever-growing love a mama has with the life inside her. My goal is for you to feel gorgeous, glowing and like a goddess. I know that might not sound easy when your body doesn’t feel like your own anymore, but let’s pamper you mama! Get dressed up and all dolled up. Show off that beautiful baby bump! I want you to look back on these photos with nothing but love, pride and a sense of accomplishment. Think about it. You grew a human!
Pregnancy is a special time of your life. As a mom of 6 I feel like you are at your most natural, feminine and beautiful self…even when your feet swell and you can’t bend over to paint your own nails. During your pregnancy, your hair gets nice and full, your skin is glows and your body has more curves. In my opinion, there’s no better way to remember your pregnancy and document your journey to motherhood than a special maternity photography session. Here are a few tips to help you look and feel your best in your maternity photo shoot. I assist all of my clients with styling and even provide a maternity client closet if needed. In the meantime, check out these tips to help you get started.
Floor length maxi dresses are super flattering on a pregnant body. They focus on your beautiful baby bump while hiding areas you may not feel like focusing on. Swollen legs or unpainted toe nails? No problem!
Wearing a tight, fitted maternity dress that shows off all your beautiful curves looks absolutely stunning. Some women feel uncomfortable doing so, but you want to highlight that gorgeous bump! The right shapewear can also help smooth any lines out as well. Flowy dresses are very popular because they feel a little less revealing. Both photograph beautifully!
If you have a gorgeous flowy skirt and a tight top, go for it! Amazon sells some popular ones. It might be nice to mix it up a little!
If you love prints, look for something that is very small (tiny florals on a mostly cream background, etc.). You don’t want the print to be the first thing you see. I usually recommend sticking with solids over a larger print.
For most maternity sessions I usually advise my clients to look for light & airy colors like white, cream, soft pinks or blues. I definitely love bolder colors too, but a soft flowy off-white dress on a beautiful mama makes me swoon. I want you to feel beautiful so choose a color that you feel flatters you the most.
Your photos will look amazing if you wear clothing that has texture to it by adding more dimension to your photos. You can pair a gorgeous scarf or large, drapy cardigan with your dress to add layers. Tiered dresses are so pretty in photos because the extra layers add a subtle, dreamy texture. By adding texture in the clothes you create more interest. The added layers typically photograph so well. It’s a great alternative to a print or pattern.
Coordinating your outfits is great for a photoshoot. However, if you are both wearing white or blue, it will be distracting. I will send my clients some color palettes or you can search a site like Pinterest to find complementary colors for you and your partner. Think of it as one outfit. You want the colors and tones to go well together. Also, consider how you will use your photos. Do you want to hang them? If so, do your outfits coordinate with your home?
There are workarounds for finding dresses that reveal a part of you that you are insecure about. If you’ve never liked your arms, don’t wear a spaghetti strap or tight sleeves! Wear a dress that has gorgeous draping sleeves, or add a pretty robe/cardigan.
Clients love to use a maternity shoot as an excuse to get dolled up! I have a few amazing makeup artists to recommend. Aim for soft, neutral colors and maybe natural pink lip. If you have the time, get your hair done too! This day is all about you mama!
Choose a dress or outfit that will accentuate your bump. Empire waists sit above your bump to highlight your beautiful belly. We will also do a lot of framing with your hands during the shoot as well.
I do have a selection of gowns to use and some great shops to refer you to. That being said, if you don’t want to purchase something you might not wear again, rent it! Rent the Runway and Mamabumprentals are great places to look. You can rent high-end brands for a fraction of the cost! It’s an amazing option when you covet that beautiful Filyboo or Reclamation dress. It doesn’t even have to be a maternity dress, just find one with that high waistband to sit right above the bump, which is perfect.
I started my own session in a gorgeous lace dress, and ended in a bikini. We could even do a whole session in a bikini with a cute beach coverup. Maybe you have a gorgeous sweater collection. Let’s get some cozy shots of you snuggling up with your baby bump. Don’t hesitate to think outside the box!
I can’t wait to work with you and create gorgeous images to document this amazing time in your life. If you’ve made it this far, you might want to check out more of my maternity blog posts or even start thinking about your upcoming newborn session!
