When Is The Best Time To Take Newborn Photos?

Hello! Congratulations on your sweet newborn! I’m so happy you found in me in your search for a San Diego newborn photographer.

I’m guessing here because you are wanting to capture your baby’s fleeting newborn days. So what is considered the “newborn stage” exactly when it comes to photography? Some newborn photographers will put a 2 week or 10 day age limit on newborn photo sessions. I definitely prefer to capture them in these first two early weeks, but there’s no reason why you can’t have your baby’s newborn photoshoot up to around three or four weeks old. Life gets in the way or maybe you had to stay a few extra days in the hospital. Don’t worry. I’ve got you mama! I’ve been a San Diego newborn photographer for over 10 years. This process is much more relaxing and stress-free than you might think!

Younger vs Older

I do recommend getting your newborn photography session done within two weeks after delivery. Babies at this age tend to be pretty sleepy & are still very curled up like in the womb. This is a great time for capturing all those gorgeous curled-up sleeping shots, snuggles with parents, and close up shots of baby’s eyelashes, lips and feet. This is also a great time to capture some photos of baby with their siblings.

Babies older than two weeks can start to be a little more alert and are growing quickly. Most have regained their birth weight and then some. They also start to lose some of that sweet, wrinkly skin and downy hair. Baby acne and peeling skin can appear from around two to three weeks old. According to, newborn acne peaks around weeks 2-4. Although none of these are reasons not to have your baby photographed, of course! A very small amount of light retouching & editing can work wonders on some flaky skin or tiny red spots. Slightly older babies are likely to be more alert and aware of their surroundings. So photo sessions with older babies can result in more ‘eyes open’ shots than sleepy ones which can be just as adorable as the sleepy shots.

Every baby is different and it is more than possible for an experienced newborn photographer to get amazing shots of your new baby during that first month. A photo session with your newborn is always a great idea. As a mom of six kids, it is super important to get these special photos of your children before they grow. Trust me. It happens overnight!
