As a mom of six—ranging from little ones to teenagers—and with over 17 years as a San Diego family photographer, I bring both professional expertise and personal insight to every session. I know firsthand how quickly these years slip by. One moment they’re taking their first steps, and before you know it, they’re reaching milestones like learning to drive.
Family life is beautifully chaotic, and the best we can do is pause long enough to capture these fleeting chapters before they’re gone. That’s where I come in. What is the best time to schedule a family photography session?
All of my San Diego family photography sessions done at the beach start within the last hour or two before sunset to ensure you get that softer light you see in all of my work. Trail sessions have a slightly earlier start, but will mostly be later in the day. I suggest booking a spot on the calendar sooner than later once you have your dates in mind. Summer and fall fill up extremely quick.
What should we wear for our family photo session?
Coordinate outfits without matching exactly. Choose a color scheme—like pastels, neutrals, or cool tones—and let each family member express their style within those hues. Solid colors or subtle patterns work best to keep the focus on your family’s faces and expressions. All of my family photography clients will get a full styling guide with tons of tips!
Do you provide wardrobe for family portraits?
Yes!! I have a beautifully curated client closet full of items for women and children. I have a small selection for men as well, but find that most have the basics we need to compliment the family's outfits in their closet already.
Where do family photography sessions take place?
As a San Diego family photographer, I have access to some of the most picturesque settings—from beaches and urban areas to parks and trails. I’m happy to recommend locations based on the scenery you love or any particular spots that are meaningful to your family.
How can I prepare for the family photography session? I'm nervous my kids will misbehave.
Talk to your children about the session in advance and let them know it’ll be a fun experience! Make sure they’re well-rested and fed before the session. This goes for husbands too! Haha! If it makes you feel any better, I have 6 kids myself and have been photographing family in all sizes (newly engaged couples to extended family sessions with 40+ people). My San Diego family photography sessions are efficient, fun and even teenage boy approved and that is saying A LOT! One of my favorite compliments came from a 15 year old boy that said, "Wow! We are done? That was actually really fun!" Success! Let's create some gorgeous memories together!
